In our example we will use a two step process to find the passport application for Xaviar Sylvester Balz from 1900 which can be found on page 291 of reel number 566.
Step 1 is to use the Fold3 Alphabetical Last Name page to identify the reel number.
Step 2 is to open up reel 566 and flip pages looking for Xaviar Balz.
Both steps are relatively easy but do take some patients and time.

Which brings up the initial screen shown below with is organized by the first letter of the applicants last name.
For Xaviar Balz we will click on letter B to bring up last names starting with the letter B.
Then using the scroll bar button on the far right hand side slide down the list until ylu find Balz.
Once the name has been located, click to the name to bring up the next summary screen.
To see that additional details click on the symbol “i” just to the bottom right of the image.
Selecting “I” under the image will bring up the detailed screen which shows the roll / reel number which we need for step 2 which is 566.
If you have a premium subscription to Fold3 you can then directly see the image of the passport application. If not, no worries, proceed to step 2, and you can use our site to find the image.
Step 2: Call up Reel and flip to page

On that page then scroll down to locate roll / reel 566.
Once there click on reel 566 to launch the book. These books are in date order and not in alphabetical order, so it does take some patients, but you can flip, page-by-page to find the details. Our example for Xaviar Sylvester Balz from 1900 which can be found on page 291 of reel 566.
Which then provides access to the original scanned passport application.
