Welcome

….Page Under Construction….
Welcome to our site which is a work in process. Several years ago I started this site as a way to help folks find genealogy resources. In the past few years I have not made many changes or additions to the site but in the background have been working on gathering many additions that will be introduced in the next few months. I also am rebuilding my links and how I present information so that it can be more easily used.

Many of the additions (data sets) are related to passenger lists (many going back to early American migration). I have also been working on the web page foundation which is WordPress and several plugins. Please bear with me as I transition the site from the old format to this new format.

Background – My own journey

This site is a result of my efforts over several years to learn about my grandfather. I started without any background in genealogy research and made many mistakes along the way. I continually got stuck and needed the help of many folks and benefited from research at several libraries, historical centers, city and county offices and many web based services who all helped me keep making forward progress. I owe many thanks to all those who helped. My research is far from complete, my next step is Lomza, Poland. I still do not know where my grandfather lived between 1914 and 1924. Still an unsolved mystery.

I created this site as an effort to help others like myself who want to get started and need to find their way to resources such as libraries, city and county offices, genealogy & historical centers and on-line webpages. I also love looking at the on-line digital versions of old books and, in fact, often get distracted reading them and don’t make enough forward progress in my research. I hope you find them as interesting as well.

I am a one-person shop doing this part time. I am writing code and trying to find new ways to present resources that will be of value.I hope you find this site helpful. Wish you all the best luck in your research.

The Journey – beyond on-line

Ten years into my own family research has taught me that in-person on-the-road research is a necessary component and a welcome aspect to the process. Sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch are amazing helpful services and they are complemented by a wide ranges of other resources available on-line that can take you far in your research.

For me, I broke through the most tricky issues with road trips to big and small venues. I visited the national archives and did primary research into military documents from France. Researching my grandfather at the archives I was able to hold original field manuals from the WW1. I am still amazed that a private non-professional has such access to historical documents, at zero cost.

Researching my grandmothers second marriage, we visited the church in PA and the current pastor invited us into his office and translated the original documents from Polish so that we could understand more about the marriage and who witnessed the marriage.

The journeys ranged from those I could do on my lunch hour, those that were a few hour drive and those requiring and overnight stay left indelible memories.

There is much research you can do from home to prepare for an in-person research trip. Local libraries, city/county offices, on-line historical and genealogical associations are great resources to understand what resources may be available. To make the most of your trip research from home and refine specifically what resources are available and the date range coverage. For example in some cities, death records for one time period may be available at a library and for another time period you may need to visit the city or county office.
