Research using library card from home

You can extend your search by using resources made available from your local library using your library card and password.  Many libraries offer remote access to several genealogy resources.  In Cleveland, the library offers remote access to historical digital newspapers, Heritage Quest and Footnote.com.

We encourage you to become familiar with the resources available at your local library. You may find the instructions to gain remote access to library resources a little tricky but investing a small amount of time learning what is available and how to gain access will pay many dividends.

Census via Heritage Quest – provides access to several databases including the census.  We continue our example and show step-by-step instructions of how to find Alta Rockefeller using Heritage Quest Online remotely using your library card for access.

Historic Digital Newspapers are available at many libraries remotely.   In Cleveland you can gain free access to the historic Plain Dealer Newspaper using your library card and password.  We show how to look up Alta Rockefeller’s marriage announcement and give some tips on digital newspaper searches.

City Directories are available via Footnote using your library card number.  We provide some tips in conducting a directory search.
